How To Listen
MAC USERS MUST BE USING WINDOWS MEDIA FOR MACINTOSH. Click
here to download. Additional, detailed instructions for Mac are the
bottom of this page.
MOST COMMON COMPLAINT: If you click on a link early in the broadcast there is a strong possibility that you may
not hear anything. If a broadcast is slated for 7:00 PM for example, and you
don't hear anything, chances are the radio station feeding gaprep.com the game
audio has not started their feed. There is nothing wrong with GaPrep, but
rather the station or broadcast team sending the audio has not begun, even
though it is past the start of the broadcast time.
QUESTION ?: The most common problem is that users do not
have their speakers turned on, plugged in, working, etc. Out of close to
40 complaints received last 2008 season, in the end, nearly 35 users admitted to
not having their speakers either turned on, or plugged into their computer.
1. The best way to hear live broadcasts or archives is by having Windows Media Player downloaded onto your computer. If you don't have Windows Media Player click on the Microsoft icon at the bottom of the page to download.
2. If you are listening to the game on AOL, and the AOL Media Player is set as your default media player, then change the preference so Windows Media Player will play the stream instead of AOL's. This is easy to do. First, click settings on the AOL menu at the top of the screen. Second, click preferences. When the "Preference Box" comes up click Multimedia. Then unclick the checks in the boxes. Save. And Windows Media Player should become your default media player next time you access a live or archived broadcast. You may need to restart your computer.
3. When you access a live or archived broadcast and the Windows Media Player will not play the stream, try closing out all your programs and restarting your computer. This is one of the quirks of PC's and a simple restart often clears up any problems that may exist.
Macintosh
Issues -
4. The other big problem experienced are those with Macintosh
computers. You will need Windows Media for Mac installed. Sometimes
though, you may still have difficulty. If that happens, follow this advice
from Lovett's Athletic Department.
1)
Download and install Windows Media Player from here.
2)
Once installed, go to GA Prep.com and select the game you want to listen
to.
3)
Highlight and COPY the web address (AKA the "URL" in green below).
4)
Launch Windows Media Player and go to FILE/OPEN URL
5)
A dialog box will pop up. PASTE the address (URL) into the window and
hit OK.
6)
The broadcast will launch and run after a short buffer builds up.
Here
is some additional information to think about or that you may want to try if
you are having problems with your Mac. The info below came from an
actual listener.
- I loaded the Mac version of the Windows
Media Player from the same site noted above.
- The file was compressed in "Stuffit"
format - - I did not have that software, so downloaded the free reader
(you do not need the paid version). If you already have Stuffit, you can
skip this step. Otherwise, here's a link
for getting Stuffit - - download and follow prompts.
- I was also prompted that I needed to
load "Rosetta" software (free extension to the Mac Operating
System, required by some programs on Macs that are Intel processor based,
which I believe includes most of the newer ones). I was led to a site for
downloading it, but also found instructions online for loading it from my
Mac system disk. It was very straight-forward. If Rosetta is already
installed on your system, you shouldn't get the prompts to install it.
- After that, the Windows Media player
worked great. Now, clicking the link in GaPrep.Com opens the file in
Windows Media Player (I don't have to copy/paste the broadcast web address
into Windows Media Player).
